A quick little thank you...

I'd like to thank all of you who came out to Fine Art in the Park in Jonesborough this past weekend. When I pulled into town on Sunday morning for the second day of the show, there were a ton of birds flying around the Courthouse clock tower. It was so pretty to watch...

We had beautiful weather for the show, and there was a pretty good turnout. I appreciate all of you who came by to show your support and also those of you who purchased something - thank you.

If you weren't able to make it, I reopened my Etsy shop today. I have several updates to the shop coming soon, so be sure to check back frequently for new items. It's never too early to begin Christmas shopping...

I'll be spending the next few days getting caught up on everything I neglected while getting ready for the show, but I hope to get back to more regular posting on here soon.

I hope you're having a lovely week.

{Art} 4th Annual Fine Art in the Park

Hi there. Things may be a little quiet here on the blog for the next couple of weeks - that's because I'm in the final stages of pre-art-show-preparation-manic-frenzy! However, I did want to let you know that you are invited to....

in Jonesborough, TN

Dates & Times:

Saturday, October 20th - 10am-5pm
Sunday, October 21st - Noon-5pm

This will be a judged and juried show and will include a variety of fine art and crafts from local artists and artisans, as well as a tasting area where you can sample locally made cheese, chocolate, wine, and honey.

This will be the last public show that I will be participating in before we move to Spain, so if you've been wanting to browse through my work in person, this is your opportunity!

I will be selling originals, various sizes of prints, greeting cards, pins, necklaces, and magnets featuring my original artwork.

Be sure to stop by and say hello if you come, and feel free to share the Facebook Event with your friends and family - the more, the merrier!

Hope to see you there!

Back in business....

Well, it's been a busy few days! As many of you know, I participated in "Fine Art in the Park at the International Storytelling Center" in Jonesborough, TN this past weekend.

It was great to see some of you - thank you so much for stopping by my tent and saying hello....

One of the most exciting things that happened during the show was having people I didn't know walk into my tent, point at a piece hanging on the wall, and say, "Oh hey, I have that hanging in my    (fill in the blank)   ." I also visited with a couple I had met two years ago who said that they had been there looking for me last year and were so glad to see me back this year, so that was exciting....

At any rate, it was a beautiful weekend and a great show. Thanks to all of you who came out! Here are a few pictures for you.... (unfortunately, they're all of my own tent - I didn't really have a chance to look at anything else, which was a shame - there were a lot of other wonderful artists there).

I really love this tent - a very kind and generous friend gave it to me when I started doing shows.
I replaced the top this year, so it's still going strong.
If you're interested, it's called a "Show Off" tent.

Another kind friend stopped by and took some photos of me actually in my booth...
I'm usually behind the camera, so it's nice to be able to prove I was there! :o)
A customer doing a little browsing...
My prints and wall display. The print rack is an old laundry cart I found at a local antique market.
Ironically, the girl that sold it to me was set up in the booth next to mine selling her paintings... it was her first show.

My table display.... and for some reason, my iphone is plopped down right in the middle of it. Ooops.

There, that's better....

And the other wall....and more prints....

And who's that cutie sitting out there studying surgery???

Oh, it's Josh! The sweet thing brought his books along and studied during the show, watched my tent for me while I took a few breaks, then helped me pack up everything at the end.... and not pictured is my Mom, who helped me set up on Friday and Saturday, helped supervise the booth, and provided some tasty snacks.... (Thanks, Mom!)
And in other news, now that the show is over, I've had a chance to update my Etsy shop! Some of the new items you'll find are....

Multiple sizes of prints, greeting cards, and jewelry featuring my new collage, "Amazing Grace":

"Amazing Grace" - greeting cards; 5x7, 8x10, and 11x14 prints available

"Amazing Grace" - Large Necklace

Several pieces of new jewelry....

"The Golden Hour" - Large Necklace

"Love in a Mist" - Large Round Necklace

"Love in a Mist" - Small Necklace

"Mont St. Michel" - Small Necklace

Back in stock: "Reepicheep" - Large Necklace
.... plus much more!

Please stop by the shop and check it out!
It's the perfect time to start your Christmas shopping! :o)

Hope you're having a lovely week.....

I couldn't ask....

...for a more perfect day for an art show than today! Thank you to those of you who came by and said hello (and maybe bought a little something)!

{Here's a little peek into my tent!}

If you missed today, don't fret - I'll be back again tomorrow.
If you'd like to come by, shoot me an e-mail and I'll give you the details.

(Oh, and if you're looking for my Etsy shop, I have it closed just for the weekend while I'm at the show - it will be back up either Monday or Tuesday of next week... so please come back!)

Hope you're having a lovely weekend!

Something changed..... something changed!?!?!

That title might only make sense if you've ever watched the Brian Regan bit about moving sidewalks in airports (it's near the end of the clip in the link).... anyway... ONWARD - through the fog!

Just wanted to let you all know that my Etsy Shop will be closed over the weekend while I participate in a local art show. But don't fret - I'll be back open for business on either Monday or Tuesday of next week. So be sure to stop back by then.... never too early to start Christmas shopping! :o)

If you'd like to come see me and do a little shopping in person at the show,
shoot me an e-mail, and I'll give you the details....

There will be a lot of other wonderful artists there too... including my good friend, Ginny Wall.

Have a lovely weekend!

A quick announcement...

Hi there...

First, we interrupt this announcement to bring you a quick follow-up to my last post and a request for your feedback...

My kind reader Mandy left a comment suggesting that some of the old Blogger templates that "stretch" across the entire width of the page don't always show up correctly in all browsers. She wondered if I had had any issues with this. In answer to that question - I personally haven't had any problems with it not showing up correctly on either my desktop or my laptop...and since Blogger has come out with a "compatibility mode" for handheld devices, it shows up correctly on my iphone as well. So, if any of you folks out there have trouble viewing my blog correctly on your particular monitor, please let me know! I appreciate your participation in this experiment... I don't want things to be all wonky when you visit!

And now, the announcement:
I just wanted to let you know that my Etsy shop will be closed over the weekend while I participate in a local art show. I will be re-opening for business sometime on Monday, August 1st, so you can come back and shop-til-you-drop then!
:o)
Yesterday I did a practice run of setting up my display in the driveway, and I was pretty happy with how it turned out. I spent about 6 hours out in the blazing sun and 100+ degree heat setting everything up like a madwoman, and then I immediately tore it down again.

I'm pretty sure my neighbors think I'm crazy...

Crazy like a fox.

It's so much easier to work out all the details and know exactly where everything's going to go BEFORE you stumble out of bed at 0'dark-thirty the morning of the show and have to go set it all up before your customers show up. Yep. Learned that the hard way.... But not this time! I may actually even get to SLEEP the night before this show! Whoo hoo!

Planning ahead....that's my game.

Here's a little peek into my tent - it was so crammed into the driveway that the only way I could photograph the whole thing with my iphone was through my kitchen window - hence the panes... How do you like my pennant banners? I just made those recently... They were super easy, and I think they're kind of festive.

I even had a surprise visitor who showed up ready to do some shopping...

But I said, "Sorry, bud, no early birds....uh...or early toads either."
So he hopped away, with an injured and slightly aloof look on his face. Toads can be kind of snooty like that.

He did mention that this one was his favorite before he left...

Anyway.

If you're the local type and are interested in coming to the show, shoot me an e-mail and I'll give you the details on when and where it is. I can't give it out to the mass public here, because, you know, there are crazy psycho killers out there, and I'm paranoid like that.

I hope you have a lovely weekend!

Drumroll please....

...and the big news is.....
...dum dum duuuuummmm.......
...
I'm on a billboard!
Well, my artwork is, at least...

(Those white spots are SNOWFLAKES!)
As you can see, this billboard is advertising our local ballet company's upcoming production.
You can learn more about Central Ballet and tickets for Exodus here.
The image has been altered somewhat from the original in order to fit the format of the billboard.
This is the original...

As I was driving home from taking the pictures of the billboard,
I saw a poster (looking much more like the original) hanging in a local shop window.
I would have stopped to take a picture of it, but the roads are icy, and it is cotton-pickin' cold here today!
Here's the poster on its own...

I have another exciting announcement to share with you...
but you'll have to wait until tomorrow!

Hope you're having a lovely day!

The Weight of Glory and of Leprechauns

Last weekend I participated in my local farmer's market. I sell my prints alongside other locals selling produce, canned goods, handmade items, and baked goods. I enjoy being part of the local community, and I meet a lot of interesting people.

Our market is made up of many different "types." We have the old-school farmers who wear overalls and obviously know exactly what they're doing judging by the size and quantity of their produce. We have the organic, crunchy people who wear tie-dyed shirts and Birkenstocks and can tell you what to put in your compost and the health benefits of certain herbs and that sort of thing. (I have nothing against Birkenstocks, incidentally - I got married in them.) Then we have the motherly/grandmotherly types who make lots of wonderful needlecrafts and baked goods. Then, you have a few odd ducks like me who don't really fit into any of the other categories. It's an interesting variety, and I enjoy it...

However, last Saturday, being a cold and slow day at the Farmer's Market, I found myself involved in what began as a very Normal Farmer's Market Conversation [NFMC], and ended up being one of the strangest and saddest conversations I've ever had. What follows is an excerpt of the conversation, as accurately as I can remember it. I have concealed the names of the other two people involved because I don’t know them for their protection. So here we go:

Lady 1 (L1): I'm almost out of goat cheese... NFMC, right?

Me: Do you make it yourself? NFMC

Lady 2 (L2): No, we get it from this lady in NC. NFMC

L1: It's so good - no artificial ingredients; just pure goat's milk. NFMC

L2: Maybe when she comes in the spring, we can get her to bring some. NFMC

Me: Is she coming for one of the Farmer’s Market demo events? NFMC

L2: No, she's coming to do a private thing at her (L1's) house. NFMC

Me: Oh, I see... NFMC

L2: She's doing a "Spirit Party." !?!

Me, leaning forward, certain that I misunderstood her through my ear muffs: A "spirit" party…? A far-off bell, clanging through the fog…

L2: Yes, a spirit party... you know, in the trees.

Me: In the trees....? Cue the Twilight Zone soundtrack.

L2: This lady we know speaks to the spirits and the sprites and the nymphs. She has been doing it ever since she was a little girl. Kitchen smoke detector, activated, 3am; simultaneously, shrieking ambulance pulls into the driveway.

L1: Yes, she’s heard them since she was 8.
Me: silence; brief clip of _The Exorcist_ runs involuntarily through brain.

L2: Yes, she's always heard them; she always kept quiet about it because people made fun of her, but now that people are more receptive to thinking that there are things out there besides us, she’s starting to speak about it to small groups. What you do is you host a party at your house….

L1, interjecting: Yes, we’ll have lunch. You can make the food, I’ll make the desserts.

L2: That sounds good, or I can make the desserts… This lady comes, and you pick out a special tree that has a deep meaning to you, and she comes and communicates with the spirits in the tree and the fairies and the elves.

Me: speechless, deer-in-the-headlights-look-on-face, glancing around, looking for the hidden camera crew.

L1 awkwardly, after looking at my face, to L2: I think I’ve picked out my tree….

L2: Oh have you, which one is it?

Me: Numbly wondering how exactly I landed on Pluto that morning…

L1: It’s a black hawthorn tree – it blooms in the spring and has thorns on it.

L2: Oh yes, I’ve heard you mention that one.

L1: It’s beautiful, and the little people like it.

Me: feeling I am beginning to have an out-of-body experience; last thing I remember thinking: “Little people… as in leprechauns.........?”

At this point, the remainder of the conversation is a bit fuzzy, as no camera crew ever popped out, no punch line was delivered, and I was left to deal with the fact that I was standing with two very normal-looking 60-something-year-old women (these weren’t even the tie-dyed Birkenstock people) who were having a serious discussion about bringing in an “expert” from NC to talk to the leprechauns and tree spirits who frequent their back yards. I believe somewhere in the fuzziness I received an invitation to attend the event next spring… but I’m pretty sure I’ll be having a headache that day.
If the whole experience had been a joke, dream, or a scene from a book or movie, it would have been outrageously funny, and I would still be chuckling about it… But it wasn’t a dream; it really happened. These two misguided ladies sincerely believe they can talk to trees and fairies in their back yards, with the help of this goat-cheese-making-medium from NC. And that is how they’re finding meaning in their lives….

It reminded me yet again that there really aren’t many different types of people out there. There are just two types… those who have repented of their sin, placed their trust in Jesus Christ, and are bound for an eternity in heaven, and those who have put their trust elsewhere and are bound for an eternity in hell: “the weight of glory,” as C.S. Lewis calls it:

It may be possible for each to think too much of his own potential glory hereafter; it is hardly possible for him to think too often or too deeply about that of his neighbour. The load, or weight, or burden of my neighbour’s glory should be laid daily on my back, a load so heavy that only humility can carry it, and the backs of the proud will be broken. It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship, or else a horror and a corruption such as you now meet, if at all, only in a nightmare. All day long we are, in some degree, helping each other to one or other of these destinations. It is in the light of these overwhelming possibilities, it is with the awe and the circumspection proper to them, that we should conduct all our dealings with one another, all friendships, all loves, all play, all politics. There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilization—these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub, and exploit—immortal horrors or everlasting splendours. This does not mean that we are to be perpetually solemn. We must play. But our merriment must be of that kind (and it is, in fact, the merriest kind) which exists between people who have, from the outset, taken each other seriously—no flippancy, no superiority, no presumption. And our charity must be a real and costly love, with deep feeling for the sins in spite of which we love the sinner—no mere tolerance or indulgence which parodies love as flippancy parodies merriment. Next to the Blessed Sacrament itself, your neighbour is the holiest object presented to your senses. If he is your Christian neighbour he is holy in almost the same way, for in him also Christ vere latitat—the glorifier and the glorified, Glory Himself, is truly hidden (C.S. Lewis, “The Weight of Glory”).

Every day we come into contact with people on one of two roads. I’m sorry to say that on this occasion, I was so stunned that I lacked the presence of mind to even know how to begin to share the Gospel with these two ladies. But if I see them again, and if they renew their invitation to their tree spirit party, I think I’ll decline, but I’ll tell them about a tree that’s meaningful to me:
On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross,
the emblem of suffering and shame;
and I love that old cross where the dearest and best
for a world of lost sinners was slain.

O that old rugged cross, so despised by the world,
has a wondrous attraction for me;
for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above
to bear it to dark Calvary.

In that old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine,
a wondrous beauty I see,
for 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died,
to pardon and sanctify me.

To that old rugged cross I will ever be true,
its shame and reproach gladly bear;
then he'll call me some day to my home far away,
where his glory forever I'll share.

So I'll cherish the old rugged cross,
till my trophies at last I lay down;
I will cling to the old rugged cross,
and exchange it some day for a crown.
(The Old Rugged Cross, by George Bennard)

A big thank you...

... to all of you who came out in the rain to Art in the Park!

We had a good day at the show,
in spite of the less-than perfect weather.

(Here I am drying things off
that got a little damp during set-up
...when it rained the most, of course!)

My parents got there in time
to help us do all the last-minute set up details...
thanks, Mom and Dad!

(and thanks for the towels!)

Sold lots of prints to some lovely people,
and I hope you enjoy them!
And best of all, got to see some good friends,
who were kind enough to stick around
and help us tear everything down ... but whose picture
I did NOT get,
thanks to our being in a bit of a rush
to get some hot food at Johnny Carino's after a long, cold day!
Thanks, guys!
